Motorists are advised to expect heavy traffic near First Horizon Coliseum this week as thousands of attendees gather for commencement ceremonies for the University of North Carolina at Greensboro (UNCG) and North Carolina A&T State University.

On Friday, May 8, the Coliseum will host UNCG Commencement at 10 a.m.

  • Peak inbound traffic: 7–9 a.m.
  • Peak outbound traffic: 1–2 p.m.

Later that day, North Carolina A&T State University Graduate Commencement will begin at 6 p.m., which will generate additional evening traffic in the area.

On Saturday, May 9, North Carolina A&T will host two undergraduate ceremonies:

  • 9 a.m. Ceremony: Agriculture and Environmental Sciences, Education, Engineering, and Health and Human Sciences
  • 2:30 p.m. Ceremony: Arts, Humanities and Social Sciences, Business and Economics, and Science and Technology

Expected peak traffic times on Saturday include:

  • 7–9 a.m.: Heavy inbound traffic prior to the first ceremony
  • 12–3 p.m.: Combined outbound traffic from the first ceremony and inbound arrivals for the second
  • 4–6 p.m.: Heavy outbound traffic following the second ceremony

In anticipation of increased congestion in the Coliseum area, the Greensboro Complex, Greensboro Department of Transportation, and Greensboro Police Department (GPD) encourage all attendees to arrive early and consider carpooling.

GPD officers will be stationed at major intersections to assist with traffic control, and variable message boards will be deployed to provide real-time parking and traffic updates.

Motorists not attending the graduations ceremonies are encouraged to use alternate routes and avoid the area if possible during peak travel times.
